When should I consider digital printing?

Digital printing is most cost efficient on smaller quantity print runs.
For example:

    • Postcards (5” x 7”) – 10,000 or less
    • Flyers (8.5” x 11”) – 5,000 or less
    • Books and brochures – 500 or less

When the printed files are set up in CMYK
or
When the print pieces require variable data (such as individual names)

When should I consider offset printing?

Offset printing is made for:

    • Larger Print Runs: Postcards over 10,000 quantity
    • Flyers over 5,000 quantity
    • Books and brochures over 500 quantity

Printed pieces larger than 12” x 18”

    • Offset press can print up to a 28” x 40” area

PMS Colors

    • When the printed piece requires a very specific matched color (such as a company’s color specific logo)
What are my choices for paper finishes?

General paper comes in 3 types of paper finishes

    • Uncoated – gives a natural muted look to the pieces
    • Silk or matte coated – has a slight coating, which makes colors and pictures stand out more
    • Gloss coated – makes colors and pictures “POP”

There are also specialty papers that are used on digital presses that create a specific look such as:

    • Metallic gold and silver paper
    • Printable vinyl and clear acetate
What are my binding options?

Perfect binding

a glued spine with a hinged cover attached. Generally used on books with more than 24 pages

Saddle Stitch

2 or 3 metal staples attached to the pages at the folded edge

  • Color options: Silver, Black, Copper

Wire-O Bound

a looped metal wire that enables the pages to be turned 360 degrees without damaging the spine

  • Color options: Silver, Black, Copper

GBC Comb Bound

Loop Stitching

Grommeting

Hard Bound

What is the best format to send my print files electronically?
  • A print ready PDF is the most efficient way to send print files electronically. The files should include 1⁄4” bleed and crop marks. If subsequent changes need to be made, the packaged Indesign files would be required.
How long does an average digital print job take?

The reason digital printing is called “on demand”, is because of the fast turnaround times. Digital prints that require just trimming can be done same day or next day.

Extra finishing such as binding or die cutting can add to 2-3 days.

How long does an average offset job take?

The set up time for offset printing takes longer than digital printing due to fact you need to make printing plates and the “make readies” to calibrate the colors.

Generally offset printing is a 2-3 day process, with added time needed for finishing such as binding and die cutting.
